Co-Lin sophomores William Clark Jr. of Taylorsville and Kortne Nelson of Brookhaven have each been chosen to receive a $4,000 Mu Alpha Theta scholarship. The national Mu Alpha Theta organization awards three scholarships to two-year college students from across the nation, and this year two recipients were Co-Lin students.

“I am extremely proud of Kortne and William. Their dedication to mathematics and outstanding academic achievement deserves this prestigious Mu Alpha Theta Scholarship,” said Mathematics/Computer Science Chairperson and Mu Alpha Theta advisor Eddie Britt. “Receiving this scholarship not only recognizes their hard work but also serves as a testament to Mu Alpha Theta’s commitment to supporting students’ academic endeavors.”

Mu Alpha Theta is the mathematics honor society for high school and two-year college students. The organization of mathematics clubs serves over 100,000 student members in more than 2,420 schools in the United States and 23 foreign countries. Mu Alpha Theta is dedicated to inspiring an interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics.

Clark serves as President of Sigma Kappa Delta, Vice President of Communication for Mu Alpha Theta, and Blue Wave Show Band section leader. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Future Business Leaders of America. Clark was selected to Who’s Who at Co-Lin and is a Foundation Scholarship recipient. He is the son of William Clark and the late Michelle Clark of Taylorsville. After Co-Lin, he plans to continue his education at Mississippi State University and complete his degree in secondary education.

Nelson serves as Vice President of Scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa, Executive Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta, and Student Government Association representative. She is a member of the Blue Wave Show Band, Color Guard, and Alpha Omega Science Club. Nelson was selected as Who’s Who at Co-Lin, Hall of Fame, a Coca-Cola Silver Scholar, and to the PTK All-MS Academic First Team. She is the daughter of Tabitha and Demetrius Nelson of Brookhaven. After Co-Lin, she plans to attend nursing school at the University of Southern Mississippi.
