Humanities can be described as the study of how people process and document the human experience. Since humans have been able, we have used philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history, and language to understand and record our world. These modes of expression have become some of the subjects that traditionally fall under the humanities umbrella. Knowledge of these records of human experience gives us the opportunity to feel a sense of connection to those who have come before us, as well as to our contemporaries.
Scholarship opportunities for students include the Bateman Creative Writing Scholarship and the Mississippi Media Scholarship.
Each February, the Natchez Literary & Cinema Celebration honors outstanding Humanities faculty members and students as William Winter Scholars. Winners are announced and acknowledged throughout events at the NLCC. The scholarship is named after former Mississippi Governor William Winter.
The Write Place is a writing center that offers free, interactive, one-on-one writing consultants for students wanting to improve their writing skills. Located in Dow/Young Instructional Building on the Wesson Campus, The Writing Center can help students during any stage of the writing process. In general, instructors help you understand your writing assignments, brainstorm ideas and “get started” on drafts, examine drafts-in-progress for strengths and weaknesses, and make plans for revising and improving your work. All students are encouraged to take advantage of this free resource.
The University of West Alabama has a Partnership Pathway with Co-Lin for students to work towards a bachelor’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communication, Graphic Design, or Sports Communication including up to 15 hours of co-enrolled course work. See your academic advisor for more details.

Clubs and Organizations
- Sigma Kappa Delta – SKD is the English honor society for two-year colleges. Membership in the Delta Alpha Chapter on the Wesson Campus is extended to distinguished students in English and literature by Humanities instructors.
- Wolf Tales – The award-winning college newspaper is written by students on the Wesson Campus. Students selected for the staff will be eligible for a scholarship.
- N-Sights – The award-winning college newspaper is written by students on the Natchez Campus.
- Fabros Mundi: Creative Writing Club – Students are able to cultivate and nurture their creative writing efforts, promote the literary arts on campus and beyond, and help further Mississippi’s remarkable literary legacy. (Wesson Campus)
Leadership Opportunities
- Phi Theta Kappa: PTK is the international honor society for two-year colleges, promoting scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship among students. Membership is by invitation only. Each campus has a chapter: Wesson Campus – Eta Omega, Natchez Campus – Alpha Alpha Zeta, and Simpson County Campus – Beta Xi Psi.
- Student Government Association: SGA serves as the legislative body for all students. Officers are elected to their positions. Organizations are on all three Co-Lin campuses.
- Trailblazers: Trailblazers are the hospitality and recruiting group that takes part in many activities at Co-Lin. Students become Trailblazers through an application process. Organizations are on all three Co-Lin campuses.
